Designed with rough and technical trail riding in mind, the M8220s combine Shimano's benchmark SPD mechanism with a wide and supportive outer cage. The outer cage protects the central mechanism from impacts, while also adding under shoe support and a platform to stand on during unplanned unclipped moments. Optional traction pins add even more grip to the platform and newly improved sealing makes these even more durable than ever.

Are these also compatible with older style Shimano cleats?
They are, or you'll get an even better interface using the new MT001 cleats (included along with the pedals).
Does it matter what kind of shoe I pair these with?
Not enormously. If you wear a stiff XC type shoe, then the cage won't add any support but you'll still get the protection. The ideal match would be a 'flat' style trail riding shoe with a little give to make the most of the wider platform.
